The Perfect Apple Pie

The Perfect Apple Pie

Friday, November 1, 2013 – by OVR Staff
Fall is time for harvest all across the country and it’s no different here in Myrtle Beach. Around here, you can find produce stands and farms all across the region and locals and tourists alike love to stop and take advantage of the freshest fruits and vegetables and nuts available! It’s always great cooking and eating what is in season, both for economical reasons, as well as nutrition benefits. Foods that don’t have to travel far to get to your table are the best foods to eat with the highest amount of vitamins and minerals! You might not think of Myrtle Beach as an agricultural mecca, but you’d be surprised to learn how many farms and produce markets there are around our area! Whether you want to pick the crop yourself or stop and buy your produce in baskets or bushels, you should definitely make this fun activity part of your experience here in Myrtle Beach.

So that brings us to one of my favorite things to do each fall—make apple pies. I’m sure I make a few dozen of them by the time Christmas rolls around and I love them because they are soooo yummy and easy to make. Apples are in plentiful supply right now and so I find lots of ways to cook with them. Even if you’re staying in a condo, you can make the best apple pie ever and eat like a king while you’re visiting Myrtle Beach! Consider spending Thanksgiving here in Myrtle Beach with your family. Many people love renting a beach house that can comfortably hold everyone and just hang out and enjoy the holiday with all the comforts of home. Our own family did that one year, and it’s one of the best Thanksgivings any of us can remember!

Enjoy the bounty of what nature has to offer this fall season and don’t forget to stop by your local market and get some fantastic apples for this super easy pie. I promise you, it won’t be around for long!

Super Easy Apple Pie

5-6 Granny Smith or other good baking apples
¼ cup sugar or Splenda
¼ cup brown sugar
2-3 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon nutmeg
½ teaspoon cloves or allspice
•You can also use 2 teaspoons of apple pie spice rather than the individual spices.
½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans
2-3 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1 box of prepared piecrusts. There are two in each box. You’ll need one for the top and one for the bottom. Don’t get generic—they fall apart!

Spread one pie crust in your pan and get the second one ready to place on top of the filling mixture.

Chop the apples in cubes. You can also slice them thinly if you like. If you desire, you can peel them, but I like the skin on mine. Place the apples in a big bowl and add all the other ingredients and toss well. Let it sit till the sugars, spices and lemon juice create a saucy type of consistency. Toss again and poor the mixture in your prepared pie shell. Top with the other pie dough and crimp the edges to seal. Make a few little cuts in the middle of the piecrust on top to allow steam to escape. If you feel like being fancy, you can add some egg wash and sprinkle a little sugar on top for a shiny finish. Bake at 375 for about 45-60 minutes or until it’s bubbly and the crust is golden brown. Happy eating from all of us here at Oceanfront Vacations!
